The Walking Blind
The work is based on a seemingly unrelated collection of elements carrying different artistic, political and historical references.
The central element of the work is a form resembling Erich Mendelsohn's iconic Hutfabric. In a series of drawings, the form appears to be floating over Marcel Breuer’s interiors, objects and buildings. A duplicate of the form, made of natural rubber, lies on the floor. The same form shows in two big scale drawings, for which diametrically different techniques, requiring different times scales, were used. Finally, the outline of the same form and the words ‘The Walking Blind’ are drawn directly on the wall and covered with a natural rubber “curtain”.
An object from the same material is placed on a stand and lit so as not to cast a shadow.
A photograph of an exact duplicate of a Berlin building, serving as a model for testing air strikes on German cities. It was constructed in 1943 in the Utah desert. Mendelsohn, himself a German-Jewish architect who fled Nazi Germany for the USA, was part of this secret project.
In a series of small paintings in pale blue and grey, a group of girls are shown walking along the horizon line. They are students of the New Mexico School for the Blind, White Sands, USA. The stills were taken from a 1938 film, produced by the United States Division of Motion Pictures.
A painting of two Chinese men lying next to each other in an opium den, and a series of small objects in pairs; black volcano stones from Mount Etna; shells from Brazil; an electronic and a paper notebook; idyllic Swiss landscapes; technical drawings; fossils from Scotland; a ceramic animal from central Asia. -
