• Suburbia

The work Suburbia takes its name from an homonymous earlier large-scale drawing. It represents the form of a tree taken out of the natural or urban environment in which it stands and deals with the ways in which the turbulent history of people is inscribed on nature and is then represented. This extraordinary piece of nature has stood in the German south for around 800 years.
How is the palimpsest of centuries inscribed in the body of the tree? How are historical myths and realities imagined and transferred to its body and image? And how can we understand the concept of time in nature, in a tree, if not as duration?
Human action is highlighted by the prosthetic supports of the tree, and with this gesture, historical time leaves its mark. Moreover, the golden ink lifts the tree from the physical world into transcendence.
Furthermore, in a series of new drawings I use artistic techniques that interrogate the logic of representation and combine themes of rural life in areas of inter-war Germany with a post-war democratic institution of power, the Parliament.
